Mylar Bag Packaging: A Practical Guide to Materials, Options and Costs

Flexible packaging is a big and expanding business and the market around the globe is estimated to be more than $250 billion per year. In that market, one of the reasons mylar bag packaging is superior to most of the alternatives is that it protects products against oxygen, moisture, and light better than most of its competitors. This guide talks about how the material functions, influences price and how to select a bag that suits your product.

What Is Mylar Bag Packaging Made Of?

Mylar is a brand name that is used by people as a replacement of biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate film or BoPET. It is hardly ever used alone by manufacturers. They then metallize it or apply a thin aluminum or metallized layer and a heat-sealable inner layer, which is typically polyethylene.

Layers do not lack work. An outer layer of polyester provides strength and ink. The metalized surface prevents gas and light. The heat melts the inner layer and binds the seams creating a closed pouch.

Why Do Barrier Films Protect Products So Well?

Most spoilage of food and supplements is caused by oxygen. Layers of plain polyethylene allow thousands of cubic centimeters of oxygen to enter every square meter every day. The difference between metallized laminates and less than 2 cubic centimeters of the same area and time is more than 99 percent.

Light and moisture are as well. Vitamins, colors and oils are disintegrated by ultraviolet rays, humidity makes crisp snacks soft and clumps powder soft. Both are prevented by a well-sealed barrier pouch and many dry products can last several weeks, or many months, when sealed in a barrier pouch.

What Are Custom Mylar Bag Packaging Options?

Custom Mylar bag packaging allows the brand to select the size, shape and printed design of each pouch. Stand-up pouches are attractive on shelves; flat pouches are used with single servings and gusseted bags are used to pack large items. Zippers, hang holes and clear windows lend functionality.

Cheap Mylar Bags Worth It

Mylar bags are inexpensive and may be used to test a product, pack samples, or keep products at home. Simple stock pouches can range in price between 10 and 50 cents apiece at medium quantities, depending upon size and density. Plain designs and standard sizes are the best to save money among buyers.

There are trade-offs to low price though. Any thin film less than 3 mil can puncture and loose seams can leak. Fill a few samples, close them and squeeze them to ensure that there are no pinholes before ordering a large quantity.

How Do Customized Mylar Bags Affect Cost?

Customized Mylar bags are more expensive per unit than stock options as each order requires a new artwork setup, ink and tooling. Small runs are more expensive per bag and often price breaks are presented at 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000. The price per bag may decrease by 30-50 percent in the smallest to the largest tiers.

Additional services contribute to the overall. Extra features like zippers and valves, special finishes like matte laminates or spot gloss and special extras add a few cents each to the price. The digital orders have a lead time of about two to four weeks and the overseas gravure orders have a lead time of six to ten weeks.

What Makes Mylar Packaging Bags Smell Proof?

Smell proof mylar packaging bags are based on the same barrier that prevents oxygen. The odor molecules are transported by plastic film in the same way gases are transported and thus a thick metallized layer traps them. The film is as important as the continuous heat seal on all sides since in most cases, leaks begin at the corners.

Choose the Right Bag

Identify the bag with the product, budget and channel of sale. Use this checklist:

  1. Establish the weight and volume of the product, then include approximately an inch of headspace.

  2. Select a film thickness of 3.5 to 6 mil depending on the sharpness or weight of the contents.

  3. Ensure that the film is compliant with FDA food-contact standards, Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations, when food is contained in the bag.

  4. Ask to be physical and test the zipper at least 50 times.

  5. Request spec sheet be provided with list of layers, thickness and seal width.

Final Thoughts

An effective pouch keeps the product safe and elevates the brand. Begin with the needs of the product; compare specs rather than claims and sample before you make a big order. Quality mylar bag packaging provides a reliable barrier against moisture and light which will help avoid expensive errors and keep contents fresh between the packing line and the customer.
